Violin & viola teaching
I teach violin and viola from beginner to advanced.
60 minute lessons
My teaching rate for a 60 minute lesson is £40.
My teaching method
When teaching beginners I use resources from the Colourstrings Method, the Suzuki Method, and Liverpool’s own In Harmony programme. After that I’m happy to work within the ABRSM framework and help students prepare for graded exams, though I don’t believe that exams are the most important part of playing.
I teach my students to play with awareness and ease by focusing on foundational technique and musicality. I adapt to my students’ individual personalities and needs as they learn how to problem solve and improve! I’m devoted and generous with my students, and I combine enthusiasm and praise with very high standards. I expect that my students will practise between lessons using the lesson notes that we write during each lesson. My students also come together to perform for each other in studio recitals which are often some of the highlights of the year!
Read some of my students' comments below!
Gwen has been tireless in her support and encouragement of my playing. She
has taken care to understand and cater to my individual needs as a student and
has been so generous with her knowledge, time and energy. I'd recommend her
lessons in a heartbeat.
The difference a teacher like Gwen can make to a student is simply beyond measure. Our girls have made fantastic progress and in their recent Grade 8 violin exams they both achieved distinctions.
Gwen's lessons are helpfully student-centered, rigorous with
attention to technique and detail but delivered with a light and thoughtful touch.
Having experienced Gwen’s teaching both in person and online, I have been amazed how she manages to retain so much of her unique teaching style online. I have even used some of her techniques in my own online instrumental lessons. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
